Indian authorities require the country's oil refineries to disclose weekly information about purchases of Russian and American oil. This was reported by Reuters, citing five industry and government sources.
The petroleum planning and analysis unit of the oil ministry is asking refineries to provide weekly information, saying the data is needed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's office.
"We want timely and accurate data on oil imports from Russia and the US so that when the US asks for information, we can provide verified figures instead of them relying on secondary sources," the official said.
The origin of oil purchased by Indian refineries is usually reflected in monthly customs data and data from private analytical firms. This is the first time the government has sought such information from refineries on a weekly basis.
At the same time, two sources in the Indian government said refineries have not received clear instructions to cut purchases of Russian crude. However, the interlocutors expect Russian crude imports to fall below 1 million barrels per day as India seeks a trade agreement with the United States.
The sources noted that India is seeking to increase purchases of U.S. crude after the country's refineries have already increased imports of U.S. gas. According to Kpler, India imported 6.6 percent of its crude oil from the US in 2025, while Russia accounted for 35 percent of imports.
