WSJ: US May Deliver Starlink Terminals To Iran Amid Internet Outages

The White House has pondered options for helping protesters in Iran.

The administration of US President Donald Trump is considering sending Starlink terminals to Iran after local authorities restricted internet access. This was reported by The Wall Street Journal, citing officials.

This way, anti-government protesters would be able to bypass internet shutdowns, the newspaper noted. The NetBlocks service reported a nationwide outage back on January 8. Iranian authorities routinely limit or completely cut off internet access when major protests or other potentially destabilizing events are expected.

According to US officials, other responses are being considered: they will be reported to Trump personally on Tuesday, January 13. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Dan Kaine, among others, will attend the closed-door meeting.

The officials said other measures the U.S. is considering include strengthening anti-government sources of information on the Internet, deploying "covert cyber weapons against Iranian military and civilian targets," as well as imposing additional sanctions on Tehran and direct strikes. Trump is not expected to make a final decision at the meeting, as discussions are at an early stage.

Protests in Iran have been ongoing since Dec. 28. They began in Tehran's main city bazaar. Initially, shopkeepers and students took to the streets, dissatisfied with the government's actions due to a sharp drop in the currency and skyrocketing prices. The protests later spread to other cities.
