The next goal has been identified.

Amid recent U.S. actions in Venezuela and threats over Greenland, Canada is closely monitoring possible risks to its security and economy, assessing the prospect of pressure from Washington.

This is reported by Bloomberg.

Potential Threats

Some experts do not rule out a scenario of "military coercion" by the United States. As Thomas Homer-Dixon notes, an attempt to pressure Washington could prove "extremely costly."

The Canadian government's former security and border adviser Wesley Wark emphasizes that U.S. actions in Venezuela and Greenland are "red flags for Canada that show the United States has changed."

Economic and Military Risks

Analysts believe a military invasion of Canada is unlikely, but economic pressure measures, including the removal of USMCA benefits or the imposition of new duties, are possible, which could hit the country hard, given that about 70% of Canadian exports go to the United States.

Canada's armed forces, numbering fewer than 100,000, are not yet prepared for a more hostile environment, although the government plans to expand the army and invest in weaponry.

Sovereignty and trade dependence

Attempts to diversify trade, including to Asian countries, are partially reducing dependence on the US. However, Carleton University associate professor Philippe Lagasse warns that the more concessions Canada makes to maintain access to the U.S. market, the greater the risk of gradually losing real sovereignty, even while formally maintaining independence.

Territorial ambitions

The U.S. president has repeatedly referred to Canada as the "51st state," insisting it join his country, and has previously imposed heavy duties on Canadian exports, which has escalated into a trade standoff between the neighboring nations.

Reminder that the president of Colombia explained that Trump is encroaching on foreign territories because of the United States' economic dependence on coal and oil, which make up about 70% of the country's energy matrix, and therefore the United States will seek military action for their production abroad.
