What might change.
Polish President Karol Nawrocki has filed amendments to the law on citizenship that would tighten the criteria for obtaining it.
It is reported by PAP.
The bill provides for the extension from three to ten years of the minimum period of continuous residence in Poland, necessary for the recognition of a foreigner as a Polish citizen.
"The purpose of the draft law is to create conditions favorable for a more complete integration of foreigners before granting them Polish citizenship," the document says.
It is also pointed out that integration into society for foreigners requires time, but the current three-year period is insufficient.
The draft also draws attention to the fact that the current 3-year residence period required for citizenship "is one of the shortest in the European Union", which "may not provide sufficient time to master the Polish language at the B1 level, understand the culture and fully adapt to the social and legal realities".
"The implementation of the proposed changes is important for ensuring the integration of foreigners into Polish society," the document says.
