On September 23, a group of independent UN experts strongly condemned the attempted deportation from Belarus and subsequent disappearance of prominent 69-year-old opposition politician Nikolai Statkevich. The statement published by the UN Human Rights Office.
"There are strong grounds to believe that Statkevich was a victim of enforced disappearance and arbitrary detention. We call on Belarus to provide information on his fate and whereabouts, as well as on his state of health," said the experts.
It is noted that after Statkevich refused to leave Belarus, he was taken away by masked law enforcers and now the politician's whereabouts are unknown.
"The attempt to expel Nikolai Statkevich from his country violates Article 12 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, ratified by Belarus on November 12, 1973," reads the statement. - In addition, it is possible that we are talking about a possible crime from the point of view of international law."
The experts reminded that the International Criminal Court in The Hague is already considering the appeal of Lithuania, which accuses the Belarusian authorities of crimes against humanity committed since 2020, in the form of deportation and persecution on political grounds.
It is once again stated that Belarus "should urgently bring its legislation on combating extremism in line with international human rights standards".
