SBU Investigates Torture Of Ukrainian Prisoners In Belarus

Possible suspects have been named.

The Main Investigative Department of the Security Service of Ukraine immediately after the liberation of Kyiv and Chernihiv regions from Russian troops opened a case on the facts of war crimes in the temporarily occupied Ukrainian territories and directly in Russia, and now added to it episodes of torture in Belarus.

The case was opened as early as April 15, 2022. A source close to Ukrainian law enforcement agencies told Radiyo Svaboda that the case now includes many episodes of cruel treatment of Ukrainian prisoners of war and civilians by, among others, "unidentified persons from among the political leadership and leadership of the Armed Forces, other military formations and law enforcement agencies of Russia in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine, on the territory of Russia and the Republic of Belarus."

In the framework of the investigation of the case, the victims are recognized as the victims of torture in Belarus. Several dozens of people have been recognized as suspects - these are citizens of Russia and Ukraine who illegally detained Ukrainians and placed them in prisons, colonies, improvised isolation centers created on the territory of enterprises, industrial warehouses and in basements in the captured Ukrainian territories.

The accused include servicemen not only of regular army formations, but also of private armies of Russia, including the private military company "Wagner".

The interlocutor of "Svaboda" did not specify which episodes of torture on the territory of Belarus are being investigated in the case.

We know at least one place where it could have happened - a Russian filtration camp, located in the town of Narovlya, Gomel region, which operated at the beginning of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
