It is an important logistical center for the supply of military equipment to Ukraine.
At least five Russian drones were targeted at a logistics center in the Polish city of Rzeszów. This is evidenced by preliminary investigation data, Spiegel and Welt wrote.
The results of Poland's preliminary investigation were announced at an internal NATO briefing Wednesday evening, Welt wrote. According to the publication, the Russian drones flew in a straight line toward a NATO base through which military aid supplies to Ukraine were being delivered. NATO suggests that at least five drones were aimed at the logistics center in Rzeszów, Spiegel specifies.
Dutch F-35 fighter jets were used to intercept these drones, Spiegel specifies. As a result, the planes were able to shoot down three drones, while two more crashed for unknown reasons, Welt notes.
Welt writes that there is growing evidence that the drones did not arrive in Poland by chance. Another argument in favor of this version, the newspaper notes, may be the fact that on Wednesday morning two more drones entered Lithuanian airspace, which had not been previously reported. "Based on the available information, we assume that the drones most likely entered NATO airspace intentionally," a senior Alliance officer told the publication.
NATO believes that Russian drones flew into Alliance airspace to test the military's reaction speed and UAV countermeasures, Welt notes. The version of a direct attack is not considered because no explosives were found among the debris, the publication adds.
The logistics center in Rzeszów is one of the most important transit points for military equipment deliveries to Ukraine. It hosts a German military contingent of about 200 military personnel and 100 pieces of heavy equipment. Two German Patriot SAMs were put on alert and tracked the drones but did not launch missiles, Spiegel reported.
