The attack marked the first time NATO has shot down Russian drones over allied territory.
The UK has said it is ready to bolster Poland's defenses with Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter jets or the Sky Sabre air defense system. The decision is being considered after NATO shot down Russian drones over allied territory for the first time in its history, writes The Telegraph.
Defense Minister John Gillie instructed the military to "consider options to strengthen NATO's air defenses over Poland" after the incident, in which 19 Russian drones entered the country's airspace. At least four vehicles were shot down during the seven-hour attack by Polish and Dutch fighter jets, Italy's AWACS aircraft and Germany's Patriot system.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk called the attack a "large-scale provocation" and said the allies had successfully repelled it. "It was a very difficult and risky operation, and very effective," he emphasized.
Other Western leaders reacted to the incident. Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte condemned the "reckless attack" and pledged that NATO would "defend every inch of its territory." The North Atlantic Council met Wednesday after Warsaw asked for consultations on Article 4 of the treaty. At the same time, the allies concluded that the incident was not grounds for invoking Article 5 on mutual defense.
Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky said the attack on Poland was part of a massive strike on Ukraine in which Russia used more than 400 drones and dozens of missiles. At the same time, he criticized the West's reaction: "There have been more than enough statements, but so far there has not been enough action. The Russians are testing the limits of what is possible. They are recording how the armed forces of NATO countries operate."
