Lukashenko Fears An Armed Uprising

Ukraine's Foreign Intelligence Service has revealed the dictator's fears.

Alexander Lukashenko wants to expand the powers of the Belarusian army, in particular, on actions inside the country. This was informed by the Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) of Ukraine on August 7.

"The draft of the new law "On amending laws on military security and defense" radically changes approaches to security: the Belarusian army gets broader powers, including on actions inside the country. The central emphasis is on the force component," said intelligence officers about the new document, which is being worked on in Belarus.

The SVR explained that the peculiarity of the bill is that it makes armed defense a priority.

"According to the update, the army in war conditions should not only repel aggression, but also "defeat the enemy" in order to conclude peace on terms consistent with national interests. The expansion of the army's functions in peacetime has attracted particular attention. The military is officially engaged to prevent internal armed conflict, participate in information confrontation "in the interests of the state," respond to internal crises and crises in allied countries, as well as to counter border provocations," the release reads.

In addition, the spies stressed that the document introduces a broader interpretation of the grounds for declaring martial law, which becomes possible not only in the case of an attack on Belarus, but also on an "allied state" or a member country of the Organization of the United Nations.
