Merz: Putin Only Pretended To Be Ready For Direct Talks

The German Chancellor said the war could continue for many more months.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has not ruled out that Russia's war against Ukraine "will last for many more months". The German prime minister said this on Friday, August 29, at a joint press conference with French President Emmanuel Macron following intergovernmental consultations between Germany and France in Toulon, DW reported.

Merz said Russian President Vladimir Putin was only pretending to be ready for direct talks with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky. "I strongly advocate that we jointly - we, that is, the Europeans together with the American government - thoroughly discuss the next steps," the German chancellor was quoted as saying by the dpa news agency.

"If there is no meeting between Putin and Zelensky by Monday, (...) it will become obvious that Putin has set up (US President Donald. - Ed.) Trump," Macron added, stressing that he intends to join Merz in a discussion with the White House chief over the coming weekend.

Merz for additional US duties against Russian Federation supporters

In the course of the briefing, the German chancellor once again called on Washington to impose duties on countries that continue to import Russian gas and oil, than indirectly finance the Russian military economy.

The first priority task for the Europeans, the head of the German government called holding the so-called "coalition of the willing," which includes about 30 countries. In this context, "Germany is primarily involved in strengthening the Ukrainian armed forces, France uses its diplomatic and military capabilities," the AFP news agency quotes Merz as saying.

The goal is a meeting between Putin and Zelensky

For now, the main goal, according to Friedrich Merz, should still be a meeting between the presidents of Russia and Ukraine, and "if necessary, with other negotiators." At the same time, the Russian side should be ready to ensure a ceasefire regime for such a meeting to take place.
