Moscow faces far-reaching economic consequences.
The latest massive attacks on Ukraine by Russia cast doubt on the sincerity of statements about the desire for peace. Therefore, "far-reaching economic consequences" await Moscow if the war continues.
Acting US Deputy Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN John Kelly said this, RBC-Ukraine reports, citing his speech at the Security Council.
"The latest strikes in Ukraine, which have resulted in numerous civilian casualties, the destruction of residential neighborhoods, the offices of the EU delegation in Kiev and the building housing the British Council, call into question whether Russia is serious about wanting to achieve peace," Kelly said, adding that attacks on civilian targets must stop immediately.
He noted that US President Donald Trump has warned Moscow of possible new economic measures if Russia refuses to negotiate and continues its aggression.
"These measures could have far-reaching consequences for Russia's future economic well-being," Kelly emphasized.
He added that the US is urging Russia to avoid this and end the violence by joining the end of the war. And he reminded that in recent weeks the US has made "exceptional efforts" to end the war and Russia should decide to move closer to peace.
"The leaders of Russia and Ukraine should agree to hold a bilateral meeting," Kelly said.
