In Ukraine, The Term "Rashism" Has Been Introduced Into Official Usage

The Ukrainian president has signed the law on national memory and the fight against "Rashism".

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has signed the law "On the Fundamentals of the State Policy of National Memory of the Ukrainian People", which for the first time enshrines the definition of the term "Rashism" at the legislative level. This is stated in a statement on the website of the Verkhovna Rada.

According to the document, Rashism is interpreted as a type of totalitarian ideology and practices underlying "the Russian Nazi totalitarian regime". This ideology, the law specifies, is based on the traditions of Russian chauvinism and imperialism, and also uses practices characteristic of the Communist and National Socialist (Nazi) regimes.

The law emphasizes that since the beginning of the armed aggression against Ukraine, Russia has been actively manipulating historical facts in an attempt to distort Ukrainian history, impose the thesis of a "common heritage" and justify the war with quasi-historical narratives. The new law should become a tool to counter such propaganda and a way to consolidate society around a common understanding of the past.

In addition to the term "Rashism", the document enshrines such concepts as "war for the independence of Ukraine", "crimes against the Ukrainian people" and "historical anti-Ukrainian propaganda". The document also stipulates that every five years the Cabinet of Ministers will approve the State Strategy for the Restoration and Preservation of National Memory and the action plan for its implementation upon the recommendation of the Ukrainian Institute of National Memory.
