The U.S. Has Assembled An Entire Flotilla Off The Coast Of Venezuela

As part of an expanded drug operation.

The US has sent eight warships to the southern Caribbean as part of an "expanded counter-narcotics operation," The Washington Post reported, citing a Pentagon spokesman.

The flotilla includes three destroyers, two landing ships, an amphibious helicopter carrier, a cruiser and a coastal combat ship. According to Axios, at least one attack submarine is also among them. Some of the ships are already in the region, some are headed there.

The U.S. ships carry U.S. Coast Guard units and law enforcement officers who will detain and arrest individuals in drug interdiction operations. The total number of military personnel on the ships is about 4,500, including 2,200 Marines, an unusually large number for an anti-drug mission.

Venezuela has already complained to U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres, calling the increased U.S. military presence "a massive propaganda operation to justify military intervention."

In 2024, Venezuela held an "election" that was "won" by Nicolas Maduro, but the opposition claims the majority of votes were cast for his opponent Edmund Gonzalez. The US has not recognized the election results and considers Maduro illegitimate.

The president and some senior Venezuelan officials are accused in the US of money laundering and drug smuggling. In July, the US Treasury Department accused Maduro of running Venezuela's Cártel de los Soles cartel and declared it a terrorist organization.

The situation has been exacerbated by Trump's recent measures, including deportations of hundreds of Venezuelans in 2025, most of them accused of belonging to the Tren de Aragua gang. In total, the U.S. has deported about 8,000 Venezuelans since February.
