Ukraine wants legally enshrined guarantees from the EU and the US.
President Vladimir Zelensky has said that Ukraine wants security guarantees from European countries and the United States to be legally enshrined. Ukraine does not need another Budapest Memorandum, Zelensky said during a briefing broadcast by Suspilne.
"What do we want? That these security guarantees from key European countries and from the United States be supported by parliaments and Congress ... We don't want a second Budapest Memorandum, we don't want the Minsk agreements. We want a serious document," the president said.
He said Ukraine would present to the allies a definition of basic things regarding security guarantees. At the same time, Zelensky could not name the dates when next week the dialog with allies on these guarantees will take place.
"We want to build the infrastructure first and understand what this 'choreography' of this will be, and this is very important," Zelensky said.
Zelensky also named three key blocks of security guarantees for Ukraine. The first block concerns maintaining the current size of the army. The second block concerns NATO - it is about agreements with partners at the level of leaders on their readiness to support Ukraine in case of new aggression. The third block is sanctions against Russia and the use of frozen Russian assets to rebuild the state.
