Von Der Leyen: Europe's Security Depends On Ukraine
Ursula von der Leyen

The president of the European Commission has warned of the risks.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen warned of the risks that Russia poses to Europe, noting in this context the importance of security of the eastern borders.

The EC president said this during a visit to Latvia, her words are quoted by The Guardian.

Speaking with Latvian Prime Minister Evika Silina, von der Leyen noted that "Europe will only be safe if its eastern border is safe."

"The risks that your country and the other Baltic states warned us about have unfortunately materialized. Russia's brutal war against Ukraine is now in its fourth year, Putin is a predator, Putin's representatives have been targeting our societies for years with hybrid attacks, cyber attacks, and the use of migrants as weapons is another example," she said.

Fon der Leyen emphasized that the entire EU must understand "that it is important to work on preparedness, to respond to growing risks and threats."

She said this includes the importance of financial flexibility for EU member states to "invest in their own defense" and the need to consider procurement across Europe.

She said that in parallel, the EU should work to strengthen Ukraine's armed forces to turn them into "a porcupine of steel, indigestible to potential invaders."
