The conflict occurred before the game even started.
After the match between Hrodna "Neman" and Madrid "Rayo Vallecano," which was held on August 28 in Madrid, a group of Spanish hooligans attacked Belarusian fans near the subway station. According to MOST, beat up Hrodna residents, Belarusian immigrants who live in Poland. A white-red-white flag with Grodno's coat of arms was taken away from them.
According to eyewitnesses, even before the game started, some of the local radical fans had questions for the guests from Belarus. Rayo fans are known for their left-wing, including communist, views and are hostile to those who do not share these views.

The Hrodna fans had no problems with displaying flags at the stadium. However, after the final whistle, about 20 aggressive Spaniards attacked five Belarusians near the subway station.
"There were only five of us. We got a beating from the Communists, but, thank God, we survived. They could have stabbed us. It happens in Spain. They managed to pull out one white-red-white flag with the coat of arms of Hrodna and ran away," said one of the fans to MOST.
According to him, the attackers did not hide their sympathy for Lukashenko's regime and openly declared their support for communism.
The match in Madrid ended with a resounding victory of the hosts: "Rayo Vallecano" beat "Neman" 4-0. For the Hrodna team, this defeat means the departure from the European Cup.
