Columbia will carry 16 Trident D5 ballistic missiles.
On August 27, General Dynamics Electric Boat (GDEB) held a keel-laying ceremony for the nuclear-powered submarine USS Wisconsin (SSBN 827) at its Quonset Point facility in Rhode Island. GDEB made the announcement on Facebook.
"With a focus on strategic deterrence, this submarine is critical to our national defense and will be built with the dedication to excellence that our ships put into their work every day," the company said in a statement.
USS Wisconsin will be the second Columbia-type ship. The first, USS District of Columbia, began construction in June 2022. Such submarines should replace in the U.S. Navy boats of the Ohio type of the Cold War.
The Columbia is expected to carry 16 Trident D5 ballistic missiles. This type of missile has a maximum range of about 12,000 kilometers. The Trident D5 is equipped with a separable warhead with individual guidance units equipped with thermonuclear charges.
Columbia will be a very large submarine with a crew of 155 people. The length of the boat is equal to 171 meters. In total, the Americans want to build 12 submarines of Columbia type.
