War "eats Up" Every Second Ruble In Russia

Kremlin spending is growing at an incredible rate.

The Russian Federation's war against Ukraine is putting a heavy burden on the shoulders of Russians. The authorities spend every second ruble of taxes collected in the Russian federal budget to support the fighting.

The Moscow Times The Moscow Times writes that the share of spending on the war reached 50.1 percent in the first quarter of this year and 48.2 percent at the end of the second quarter.

According to calculations by Janis Kluge, a researcher at the German Institute for International Security Problems, based on data from the Electronic Budget system, 24.4% of tax revenues will be spent on the war against Ukraine in 2022; 32.05% in 2023 and 39.05% in 2024.

It is stated that the share of military spending is lower because it exceeds revenues and the budget is in deficit. Thus, in January-June, the Russian Finance Ministry collected 17.584 trillion rubles, while it spent 21.278 trillion rubles. At the same time, 39.9% for the half-year and 41.2% in the first quarter went to war.

The Moscow Times reports that these are absolute records in the modern history of the Russian Federation and even exceed the levels of the last years of the USSR.

Reuters earlier wrote that the Russian Federation's 2025 budget law first set aside 13.5 trillion rubles for "national defense" and another 3.459 trillion rubles for "national security," which included the budgets of the police, Rosgvardia, Investigative Committee and special services.
