Assessment from the CEO of the Rheinmetall Group.
Right now, the entire Western world has about two million artillery shells at its disposal. This is not enough. It will take at least 10 years to replenish the stockpile.
Rheinmetall CEO Armin Papperger told Sky News.
"Now the Western world has about two million artillery shells, this is not enough. We need more, and 50% of these shells will be produced at Rheinmetall," Armin Papperger said.
Answering a question about how many two million shells would be enough, he said, referring to the words of Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky: 2.5 million shells are needed in the case of a truce and 4.5 million in the case of war.
The weapons concern's CEO estimates that it will take 10 years to fully replenish the stockpile. However, Europe will be able to defend itself if attacked sooner.
German concern Rheinmetall is Europe's largest arms manufacturer and wants to produce 350,000 shells a year by 2027.
155-millimeter shells will be used to replenish the German army's armaments and increase the armament of Ukraine.
The concern is also building a gunpowder factory in Romania, two factories in Bulgaria and a gun barrel factory in the UK. These projects are a direct response to Russian aggression and the demand by Germany and its European allies to rearm in response.
