It will have peacekeeping contingents.

European leaders are considering creating a 40-kilometer buffer zone between the Russian and Ukrainian front lines as part of a peace agreement.

This is reported by Politico.

According to five European diplomats, the proposal is one of several that military and civilian officials are considering regarding a post-war or ceasefire scenario in Ukraine.

The idea is to create a demilitarized territory where peacekeeping contingents could operate to oversee the cease-fire.

But officials are divided over how deep the actual zone could be and how many troops would be needed to patrol it. A figure ranging from 4,000 to 60,000 military personnel is being discussed.

So far, countries have yet to make any commitments, and President Donald Trump has dismissed the potential presence of U.S. troops altogether.

It is also unclear whether Kiev would approve the plan, as it would likely be accompanied by territorial concessions.

"They're grasping at straws," Jim Townsend, a former Pentagon official who oversaw Europe and NATO policy during the Obama administration, commented on the initiative. - The Russians are not afraid of the Europeans. And if they think a few British and French observers are going to stop them from invading Ukraine, they're wrong."
