The meeting was held in Alaska.

The hierarch of the Orthodox Church in America, Alexius, who met with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin during his visit to Alaska on August 15, has apologized for the meeting.

A statement by Archbishop Alexius of Sitka and Alaska was published on the website of the Orthodox Church in America on August 22.

In the statement, the archbishop says he wants to offer "sincere apologies" to those who have experienced pain, suffering or misunderstanding due to his action.

According to Archbishop Alexy, many have rebuked him for not directly addressing Putin about the need for peace in Ukraine. He argues that the official position of the Orthodox Church in America, which has repeatedly condemned the Russian invasion of Ukraine, has not changed.

"I deeply regret the scandal that was provoked," Alexy noted.

The superior of the Orthodox Church in America, Metropolitan Tikhon, said in a statement that the archbishop met with Putin on his own initiative, without the blessing of the Synod. He emphasized that the church still condemns the war and calls for an immediate end to it.
