Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has fired the head of the Defense Intelligence Agency, whose investigation denied the success of US strikes on Iran's nuclear program.
It was reported by Bloomberg.
A senior Pentagon official said Jeffrey Cruz will no longer serve as director of the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA), the publication writes. In addition, Senator Mark Warner, who serves on the Senate Intelligence Committee, also confirmed the official's dismissal.
"The firing of yet another top national security official underscores the Trump administration's dangerous habit of treating intelligence as a loyalty check rather than a means to protect our country," Warner said
Bloomberg notes that Cruz oversaw an investigation that concluded that U.S. strikes in June probably did not damage key underground components of Iran's nuclear program.
U.S. President Donald Trump, by contrast, claimed the facility was "totally destroyed." Hegseth also opposed the agency's preliminary assessment of Cruz.
"Again, this is preliminary information, but it was leaked to the press because someone wanted to confuse the situation and make it look like this historic strike was not successful," Hegseth said at the time.
The publication added that Jeffrey Cruz was the 23rd director of the Pentagon's Intelligence Directorate and previously served as senior military adviser to the director of National Intelligence.
According to the BBC, he commanded Air Force and joint units "at the squadron, group and wing levels."
As Bloomberg specifies, Cruz's nomination to head the DIA was nominated by former US President Joe Biden and unanimously approved by the Senate at the end of 2023.
