WSJ: Trump Faces A Choice

Peace diplomacy has failed.

Just a week after Presidents Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin's talks in Alaska and four days after the White House summit, it's clear that President Trump's renewed efforts to achieve early peace have apparently stalled again, and the U.S. president's own optimism has faded, writes The Wall Street Journal.

On Thursday, August 21, Trump wrote on his Truth Social network that Ukraine has virtually no chance of winning the war without strikes on Russian territory. "It's like a great sports team with a fantastic defense that is not allowed to play offense. There is no chance of winning!" - he wrote, while once again criticizing his predecessor Joe Biden, who "did not allow Ukraine to respond, only to defend."

Now Trump, the WSJ writes, is once again faced with a choice that has been before him for the entire seven months of his presidency: how far he is willing to put pressure on Vladimir Putin and how far he is willing to go in supporting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

The newspaper believes it is already clear that Trump's hopes for an early meeting between Putin and Zelensky - with or without his participation - have not materialized. U.S. and European officials continue to negotiate security guarantees for Kiev, discussing the possible format of peacekeeping forces that could be stationed in Ukraine - although the Kremlin has already made it clear that it would not be satisfied with the presence of foreign military forces on Ukrainian territory.
