He's suspected of leaking confidential documents.
Early this morning, the home of former Trump adviser John Bolton was searched. An AFP reporter saw FBI agents entering Bolton's Maryland home. According to the New York Post, the searches were part of a national security investigation and ordered by FBI Director Cash Patel.
"NO ONE is above the law. FBI agents on a mission," Patel wrote in X, apparently alluding to the searches of Bolton's home. The post was reposted by the official White House account. There has been no official comment on the topic yet.
Fox News reported that the investigation is related to a leak and police were looking for confidential documents. According to the network, Bolton is not currently under arrest.
Bolton was undersecretary of state for arms control and international security under George W. Bush Jr., from 2001-2005, and then U.S. permanent representative to the United Nations from 2005-2006.
Bolton is known for his conservative views on foreign policy and as a hardliner on North Korea, Iran, Cuba, as well as Russia and its allies. He has repeatedly spoken out against any treaties that curb U.S. nuclear capabilities.
In the first Trump administration, he briefly served as national security adviser from April 2018 to September 2019. Trump claims he fired Bolton because their views on foreign policy diverged widely. Bolton himself insists he left the administration by his own decision. After his resignation, Bolton wrote a book in which he criticized Trump for, in his words, subordinating the country's foreign policy to his tactical political interests.
When Trump became president again, he stripped Bolton of the protection he had been given after the U.S. Justice Department said there were threats to his life from Iran.
After Trump's discussion with Zelensky in the Oval Office, Bolton said that "Trump and Vance have declared that they are on Russia's side in the Russia-Ukraine war." The BBC's Russian Service spoke to Bolton this week about what Trump achieved in his talks with Putin and Zelensky.
