Kiev has rejected such "proposals".
Russian ruler Vladimir Putin has put forward new conditions for ending the war. He demands that Ukraine completely renounce Donbass, from joining NATO, consolidate its neutral status and guarantee the absence of Western troops on its territory. This is according to Reuters, citing three sources familiar with the Kremlin's top-level discussions.
The sources said that in return, Russia is ready to freeze the current front lines in the Zaporizhzhya and Kherson regions and even return small parts of Ukraine's Kharkiv, Sumy and Dnipropetrovsk regions that it now controls. Putin discussed these terms with U.S. President Donald Trump on Aug. 15 at the Anchorage summit, which was the first meeting between Russian and U.S. leaders in four years.
According to the interlocutors, Putin has softened his previous conditions - he had previously insisted on fully handing over four Ukrainian regions, including Kherson and Zaporizhzhya, to Russia. However, key to the truce remains the demand for a full Ukrainian withdrawal from Donetsk and Luhansk regions.
Kiev has rejected such proposals. Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky said that Donbass is a strategic line of defense and abandoning it is unacceptable. In addition, the NATO membership course is enshrined in Ukraine's constitution and, according to Zelensky, Moscow has no right to demand that it be abandoned.
