The U.S. Is Screening All Visa Holders

The State Department's action will affect more than 55 million people.

The US State Department said it has launched a sweeping sweep of more than 55 million foreigners with valid US visas to detect possible violations of immigration laws, writes Associated Press.

The administration of US President Donald Trump has sharply stepped up scrutiny of foreigners with US visas. Authorities say all visa holders are under "constant scrutiny" and if someone is found to have violated the terms of their stay in the US, engaged in criminal activity, threatened security or been linked to terrorism, their visa will be revoked and they could be deported.

The focus was previously mainly on student and visitor visa holders, but now the scrutiny extends to everyone, including people with work and multiple-entry tourist visas, as well as those outside the US.

The State Department explained that it checks foreigners for possible grounds for visa revocation - such as exceeding the length of stay in the U.S., committing crimes, threatening public safety, engaging in terrorist activities or collaborating with terrorist organizations.

The rules have also been tightened for new visa applicants: they now have to be interviewed at consulates with privacy settings on their phones and apps turned off so staff can check their accounts.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the growing number of foreigners driving heavy trucks threatens highway safety and reduces the income of U.S. truckers. Authorities had previously introduced a requirement that all drivers in the US be able to speak and read English fluently. The State Department explains the decision by concern for safety and stability of supply chains, but experts warn: it will hit companies that have been suffering from a shortage of personnel in the transportation industry.
