Finnish President Tells How He Harassed Russians At The Airport
Alexander Stubb

In RF, airport employees wanted a bribe.

Finland's current president, Alexander Stubb, once had to use the number of Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov to thwart Russian bribery at an airport.

The story Stubb told in his new book "Triangle of Power," which was published on Thursday, August 21, Finnish publication Yle.

According to the politician, once, when he was Finland's finance minister, he traveled to Siberia as part of the business delegation of the country's president Sauli Niinistö.

On the way back, the airport staff almost delayed the flight - allegedly because of the lack of necessary documents. The situation was resolved thanks to Stubb's resourcefulness and the fact that he had Lavrov's personal number.

"We know they want a bribe. I lose patience and show Sergei Lavrov's number in my phone. If they won't let us go, I'll call him. I'm ready to press the button. The ruse works. We are allowed to fly out," Stubb wrote.

According to Yle, Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine is a turning point in the Finnish president's book.

In Stubb's view, Russia is an "imperialist and authoritarian state" that is nostalgic for its great power status and has failed to reform its natural resource-based economy.
