US Air Force fighter jets could enforce a no-fly zone over Ukraine as one of the options of post-war security guarantees for the country, which has been repelling Russian aggression for 3.5 years. In addition, Washington's "air" support could include a large number of air defense systems (air defense systems). This was reported by Reuters, citing the US military, which together with its European counterparts have prepared options for assistance to Ukraine involving their armed forces.
"These options will be presented to each country's national security advisers for appropriate consideration as part of ongoing diplomatic efforts," the US military said in a statement. Meetings between the defense chiefs of the United States, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Britain and Ukraine were held in Washington from Tuesday, when the White House hosted a summit on ending the war, through Thursday.
Officials from the allied countries developed scenarios for military assistance to Kiev, taking into account the need to determine what would be both militarily feasible and acceptable to the Kremlin, Reuters noted. One option was to send European troops to Ukraine, but under U.S. control of the peacekeepers. However, Moscow has repeatedly opposed the presence of NATO troops in Ukraine.
August 19, in an interview with Fox News, President Donald Trump mentioned that among the security guarantees to Kiev that Washington would provide could include support for U.S. aviation. "We are ready to help them in everything, especially, perhaps, we can talk about air support, because no one has the capabilities that we have," the head of the White House stated. At the same time, he emphasized that Ukraine's membership in NATO was out of the question.
The Times reported that representatives of European countries during a meeting with the head of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen. Dan Kane, on Wednesday suggested deploying U.S. F-35 fighter jets to Romania to deter Russia from invading again after a peace deal is reached in Ukraine. NATO is building its largest airbase in Europe in that country.
