The project was named "Baltic Defense Line".
Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia have started fortifying their borders in case of possible aggression by Russia after the war in Ukraine is over. Lithuania, which borders Belarus and Russia's Kaliningrad, has drawn up a plan that includes minefields and bridges prepared to be blown up, going as deep as 50 km of territory, writes Daily Express (translated by Charter97.org).
The Baltic Defense Line project will unite the three countries and stretch from Kaliningrad to the mouth of the Narva River. It will include about 1,000 concrete bunkers, anti-tank ditches and supply lines. The goal is not to create an impassable barrier, but to slow the enemy's advance and direct them to areas convenient for defense.
According to former Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis, the greatest danger to the Baltic states will come immediately after a possible cease-fire in Ukraine. "Putin will not let us wait 10 years," he said.
The cost of the project is estimated at about 70 million euros for each country, a significant portion of their defense budgets but not comparable to the cost of a long war.
Fears are heightened by the fact that in the first months of a full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the Russian army seized territory twice the size of Lithuania. "We have no strategic depth. The Russians can pass through the country in hours, if not days," Landsbergis emphasized.
