Moscow and Kiev should organize the negotiations themselves.
US President Donald Trump has decided to abandon attempts to organize a bilateral meeting between Vladimir Putin and Vladimir Zelensky, The Guardian reported, citing sources in the US administration.
The Guardian's interlocutors say Trump has decided that Moscow and Kiev should take care of organizing face-to-face talks between the presidents themselves, which Trump believes should be the next step in ending the war.
Trump will not play a direct role in organizing the meeting, The Guardian's sources said. They say the US president has told advisers in recent days that he intends to hold a trilateral summit with his participation after Putin and Zelensky meet.
Whether the meeting itself will take place remains unclear, The Guardian emphasizes.
The plans to organize the talks, which would be the first face-to-face meeting between Putin and Zelensky since 2021, were announced by Trump on Monday - shortly after he received Zelensky, EU leaders and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte at the White House. Western media sources claimed that Putin had agreed to Trump's proposal, which the latter announced in a phone call with the Russian president.
There was, however, no official confirmation from the Kremlin.
