US And NATO Develop Options For Security Guarantees For Ukraine

Trump promised to provide Kiev with a "very good defense."

The U.S. and European militaries are beginning to work out options for security guarantees for Ukraine after the war ends, sources told Reuters (translated by Charter97.org). This followed a statement by US President Donald Trump, who promised to provide Kiev with "very good protection" as part of a possible peace deal.

Sources say the Pentagon is holding scenario exercises to determine the format of support beyond arms deliveries. Among the ideas being discussed is the deployment of European troops to Ukraine under U.S. command, but not under the NATO flag. However, such plans could take time and raise objections from Moscow.

Trump himself has ruled out sending U.S. ground troops, but has hinted at the possibility of U.S. involvement in the form of air support. In an interview with Fox News, he said Washington could help "from the air," as the US has technology that others do not. Support could include the supply of additional air defense systems or even the imposition of a no-fly zone by U.S. fighter jets.

Since the full-scale invasion began, Russia has claimed Moscow is conducting a "special operation" to protect its interests from NATO. Kiev and its allies consider it an attempt to seize territory.

In the meantime, NATO military leaders will hold a virtual meeting on Wednesday to discuss Ukraine and the outcome of Trump's talks with Putin in Alaska. According to Reuters, senior U.S. and European generals will participate in the consultations.
