The Russian Government Has Stated That Trade With China Has Begun To Decline

Russia-China trade in 2025 began to decline for the first time since the war began.

Russian-Chinese trade in 2025 has begun to decline for the first time since the war began, Russian Industry and Trade Minister Anton Alikhanov said Tuesday.

According to Chinese customs data, bilateral trade in January-July fell 8 percent year-on-year to $125.8 billion after nearly doubling in the previous three years to a record $245 billion in 2025.

"This year we are recording a certain decline in mutual trade," Alikhanov admitted.

"The reasons for such dynamics are, of course, diverse," he continued. - This is the negative impact of sanctions and other forms of economic pressure on our countries and volatility in certain commodity markets. We also note the gradual saturation of Chinese products in certain market segments, as well as internal economic processes in both Russia and China" (quoted by Reuters).

At the end of the first half of the year, China reduced purchases of almost all key commodities in Russia, according to statistics provided by experts of the Gaidar Institute. Oil supplies fell by 11% (to 49.11 million tons), oil products - by 28% (to 5.51 million tons), LNG - by 13% (to 3.22 million tons), timber - by 10% (to 4.53 million tons), coal - by 10% (to 38.97 million tons)

Deliveries of pipeline gas to China increased (by 23%), as well as industrial metals: nickel - by 94%, aluminum - by 91%, copper - more than doubled.

Supplies from China to Russia also decreased - by 9%, the Gaidar Institute points out, primarily due to imports of cars, which collapsed by 61%.

There will be no return to the previous rapid growth of trade with China, Alikhanov believes. "In the medium term, we should expect more moderate than before growth rates of mutual trade with a consistent increase in the share of high-tech and innovative products," he said.
