Bad day for Putin.

The Transatlantic Alliance faced a major test in Washington on Monday. European leaders arrived in the US capital with fears that US President Donald Trump could once again draw closer to Putin and force Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky into a risky deal, writes Politico.

The meeting went differently, however. Zelensky was in a suit and also handed the president's wife Melania Trump a letter from his wife thanking him for his attention to the plight of 20,000 abducted Ukrainian children. This set a new tone for the meeting: reserved and diplomatic.

When asked by reporters about Ukraine's NATO membership and security guarantees, Trump said there are no final decisions yet, it should be discussed with European leaders. In doing so, he publicly suggested for the first time that the U.S. could play a key role in security guarantees for Ukraine, noting that European countries would be the "first line of defense," but that America would help and make it "very safe." Europeans called such a statement a "breakthrough."

Although so far it is more about intelligence, guarantees and possible large arms deliveries than troop deployments, Trump's move is perceived as more serious than his earlier vague statements about Putin and U.S. interests.

The Kremlin appears to be concerned. Moscow insists that Ukraine should not join NATO and rejects the idea of foreign troops being stationed on its territory. At the same time, Trump emphasized that any talks on borders must come from the current front line, without regard to Russia's territorial claims.

The meeting strengthened Western unity and brought the U.S. back within the framework of transatlantic coordination, which British officials characterized as "a bad day for Putin." Nevertheless, European leaders note that the road to peace will be long and challenging.
