U.S. forces will be deployed in the coming days.
Three U.S. guided-missile destroyers USS Gravely, USS Jason Dunham and USS Sampson, 4,000 sailors and Marines, a P-8 reconnaissance aircraft and an attack submarine are headed for the shores of Venezuela. They will be deployed in the coming days as part of efforts to counter threats from Latin American drug cartels. This was reported by two Reuters sources familiar with the situation (translated by The Moscow Times).
President Donald Trump wanted to use the army to fight Latin American drug cartels, which have been designated as global terrorist organizations.
The U.S. military plans to operate in international waters and skies, will conduct reconnaissance and possibly conduct pinpoint strikes.
Aiding the drug cartels, according to the U.S. administration, is Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro. The State Department is willing to pay up to $50 million for information that would help arrest Maduro. U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi noted that Maduro is using "foreign terrorist organizations" to get deadly drugs into the country. The US accuses the Venezuelan president of facilitating drug traffickers from the Cartel de los Soles (Cartel of the Suns), the Train from Aragua (Tren de Aragua) and the Sinaloa Cartel to supply cocaine and fentanyl to Americans. Last month, the Trump administration announced sanctions against Maduro's groups and government. Washington also does not recognize Maduro's two electoral victories at once.
