This will put more pressure on the Kremlin.
French President Emmanuel Macron has called for "stronger sanctions" against Russia if talks to end the war in Ukraine fail. He said this to reporters in Washington, quoted by BFMTV.
"If this process is rejected, we all agree that we need to strengthen sanctions and, in any case, to take a position that will put more pressure on the Russian side," the French leader emphasized.
Meeting in Washington - politicians' statements
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte earlier made a statement on security guarantees for Ukraine after the meeting in Washington. He said Ukraine's membership in NATO is not being discussed, but security guarantees like "Article 5" are being discussed.
"The situation is as follows: The US and some other countries have said they are against Ukraine's membership in NATO. NATO's official position ... is that there is an irreversible path for Ukraine to NATO," Rutte stressed.
It is known that Article 5 of NATO's founding treaty enshrines the principle of collective defense, according to which an attack on any of NATO's 32 members is considered an attack on all.
At the same time, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer named two main results from the meeting between Zelensky and Trump.
He said that the first result is that the coalition of the willing "will now work with the US" on security guarantees. He called the second important result an agreement to hold a meeting between Zelensky and Putin, which Trump will attend.
"It's a recognition of the principle that for some of these issues, whether it's territory, or prisoner exchange, or the very serious issue of the return of children, Ukraine needs to be at the table. Those were the two most important results of today. They are positive results, there was a real sense of unity. Today we have made real progress," Starmer assured.
