Belarus is preparing to make a big pharmacological breakthrough. The same place where it has been preparing before. The enterprise BelVitunipharm, which was to make a domestic vaccine against covid-19, promises to finally launch by 2030. "We discussed your business plan in detail, but, as the famous saying goes, it was smooth on paper, but we forgot about the ravines," Lukashenko said on Friday at the meeting dedicated to the future of Belarusian pharmacology.

Lukashenko held the same meeting with the same BelVitunipharm in 2021. Then it was about creating a domestic vaccine against covid-19. Because imported vaccines did not suit Alexander Lukashenko. Mainly because they were imported. And the Belarusian vaccine was supposed to be a breakthrough in the world pharmacology.

"We won't oversleep, we will turn around - so we will quickly get production with export potential of hundreds of millions of dollars," dreamed Lukashenko.

But something went wrong. The domestic vaccine was registered only at the end of 2023. By that time, 90 thousand people had died from the consequences of covid-19 in Belarus, where the authorities chose a unique way to fight the epidemic.

How (not) to make millions

Making hundreds of millions on the export of the unique Belarusian vaccine did not work either. According to the plan, BelVitunipharm was supposed to produce 4 million doses of the vaccine in 2024. As of the end of 2024, its industrial production has not started. As well as the production of vaccines against alcoholism and drunkenness, promised by the enterprise. At the end of 2024, the director of the enterprise was sentenced to four years in prison for abuse of power.

"The production complex for vaccines has not been completed, and expensive equipment is idle. This is unacceptable. You were allocated a lot of budget money," complained Lukashenko.

But this failure did not affect the plans. To be more exact, the plans have become even grander. If earlier it was a question of producing some unique domestic vaccines, now the authorities promise full pharmacological import substitution.

"Biotechnology is the future of mankind. Therefore, we must play the first fiddle here or we won't be there in the future," said the chairman of Vitebsk Regional Executive Committee Alexander Subbotin.

But this time they decided to insure the timing. Full pharmacological breakthrough is promised by 2030. And by that time, you may see that there will be no one to report on the work done.
