The former British prime minister was not shy in his expressions.
Former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, known for his active support of Ukraine while also sympathizing with U.S. President Donald Trump, published an article in The Daily Mail. In it, he shared his thoughts on Trump's meeting with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin and assessed its possible impact on the credibility of the United States.
"Well, it was hardly the most nauseating episode in the entire sordid history of international diplomacy to see Putin welcomed on American soil. I wanted to vomit watching him being applauded on the red carpet," Johnson wrote for The Daily Mail.
The former British prime minister also noted that it was nauseating "to see Gollum smile" when the Russian president was invited to ride in the American leader's limousine.
Johnson said it was difficult to listen to Putin's speech, as he displayed "bland predictability" while trying to ingratiate and humiliate Trump at the same time. The British politician added that this rhetoric disgusts not only Ukrainians.
"Imagine what it is like to be one of the heroes who were in battle, in a dugout near Pokrovskoye, fighting for the freedom of their country, and to hear the president of the United States - captain of the Free World team - call Putin 'boss,'" Johnson wrote.
In his article, he noted that one sometimes hears claims about the White House's desire to "stop the deaths" or "stop the killing" in Ukraine, as if both sides were responsible. The politician called such statements nonsense. He emphasized that it is Putin who is responsible for every death in this war - both Russians and Ukrainians.
At the same time, the former British prime minister wrote that, like many of the most unpleasant examples of historic diplomacy, this meeting "was nevertheless justified and even necessary."
"Although it was nauseating, Trump was right to try. He was right to meet with Putin, because if millions of Ukrainians watched in horror as they watched the Russian tyrant's rehabilitation on the red carpet, they also cherished hope," Johnson writes.
