Russia's dictator is not serious about negotiating with the U.S. president.
Russian dictator Vladimir Putin is not serious about negotiating with US President Donald Trump in Alaska. He wants to take a picture with the American leader and delay sanctions.
The EU's high representative for foreign affairs and security policy, Kaja Kallas, said this in an interview with "Suspilny".
She said the US has leverage over Putin, and this leverage should be used wisely.
"It is evident from the fact that Putin is now sitting down at the negotiating table, but it is clear what Putin wants. He wants a photo opportunity with President Trump, the most powerful man on earth, and then he wants a postponement of the threat of sanctions to pretend to negotiate so that the threat is no longer there," Callas noted.
She emphasized that the result of the Alaska meeting should be an unconditional ceasefire so that real negotiations between Ukraine and Russia can begin.
Callas also believes that Putin is not serious about negotiations, otherwise the Ukrainian president would also be at the meeting.
"President Zelensky should be part of the meeting. It's clear that Putin doesn't want him there. Why is that? Because he is not serious about any peace talks. If he was serious, he would want to talk to Zelensky directly because the war is going on in Ukraine, between Russia and Ukraine. Therefore, in order to have some results or real negotiations, it is necessary to negotiate with those who are concerned, namely Ukraine, with President Zelensky," she said.
The EU chief diplomat emphasized that the West should "put pressure on the aggressor to make concessions, which it has not made so far and all pressure should be directed at the aggressor, not at the victim."
