What Happens When Mark Zuckerberg Lives Nearby?

The billionaire spent more than $110 million to buy at least 11 homes.

In the upscale Crescent Park neighborhood in Palo Alto, which for years was home to lawyers, businessmen and Stanford professors, life was quiet and measured. But that all changed 14 years ago when Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of Facebook, moved here, writes The New York Times (translated by Charter97.org).

In that time, the billionaire has spent more than $110 million to buy at least 11 homes, turning them into a large family compound with a main house, guest buildings, a swimming pool and a private school for the kids. Five of the homes are still empty, but construction and constant remodeling have been going on for eight years, disturbing the quiet of the neighborhood.

Neighbors complain about the intense surveillance - Zuckerberg's cameras are pointed at neighboring properties as well, and security guards are on duty on the streets, monitoring visitors and passersby. In addition, the neighborhood often hosts noisy events and parties, accompanied by road and parking lot closures.

Residents express dissatisfaction that city officials are virtually unresponsive to complaints and, in their opinion, are going along with the billionaire to the detriment of the rest of us. In response, Zuckerberg's representatives say the family's safety requires special measures and that neighbors are regularly informed of potential nuisances.

Many neighbors say the neighborhood has lost its coziness and become a private area for a select few. "They're occupying our neighborhood," says one resident.
