A few days before the talks with Putin.
Three B-1B Lancer supersonic bombers have traveled 4,800 miles and arrived in Norway for joint exercises with European allies. This is their first deployment to the country since 2021. According to a U.S. Air Force press release, having the aircraft in Norway will allow aircrews to improve tactics, increase maneuverability and enhance coordination with NATO allies through joint exercises and operations, which will improve combat capabilities and readiness. U.S. Air Forces Europe specifies that in Norway, airmen will practice strike missions in near combat conditions, including real-time action against threats. These threats will be both airborne and ground-based, writes The Moscow Times.
According to the Norwegian Armed Forces, the U.S. bombers will conduct exercises with F-35 fighters based at Erlann Air Base. The location of the training is not officially disclosed, but the flights are expected to take place in the Northern Europe and Baltic region. The duration of the B-1B from Dyess in Norway is not specified, but such missions often last a month or more.
The deployment comes a month before the start of the large-scale strategic exercise Zapad-2025, which Russia will hold jointly with Belarus. The last such maneuvers in the western (European) theater of military operations - Zapad-2021 - included participation of the Northern Fleet with 3,000 servicemen in the border areas with Norway and Finland, as well as exercises of ships and aircraft to protect Arctic bases in the Barents Sea. In 2021, during the previous deployment of B-1Bs to Erlann, the Russian Northern Fleet sent the missile cruiser Marshal Ustinov to the Varangian Fjord near the maritime border with Norway.
The news of the aircraft deployment came shortly after Donald Trump announced that his face-to-face meeting with Vladimir Putin would take place on August 15 in Alaska.
