Trump Wished Switzerland A Happy Public Holiday With 39% Duties

This is the highest rate in Europe.

Congratulations on the occasion of a national holiday. And now - get a draconian duty: this is what a diplomatic "postcard" from the United States to Switzerland looked like. On Thursday, Washington announced the introduction of the highest tariff among all European countries just in relation to this state. This was reported by Politico.

And the very next day, Friday, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio released a statement praising the "strong and stable relationship" between the two nations.

"Our cooperation spans trade, finance and security, where Swiss leadership and reliability continue to have a global impact," Rubio said. - "We sincerely wish the Swiss people a successful and meaningful celebration and look forward to continued cooperation in the years ahead."

On Aug. 1, the country of nine million celebrates the anniversary of the founding of the Swiss Confederation, an event that occurred in 1291. Like Americans on July 4, the Swiss throw fireworks and parades.

But the current mood may be quite different, as Switzerland came out of the negotiations in a much worse position than the European Union. Brussels struck a last-minute deal with President Donald Trump, fixing the basic duty rate at 15%. The UK will pay only 10%.

Although US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent visited Switzerland in May, his talks were not at all about Swiss-US relations, but about dialog with Chinese representatives. As a result, the Alpine republic - along with its powerful financial and pharmaceutical sectors - was left on the sidelines.

The Federal Council, Switzerland's collegial government, said it was "deeply disappointed that, despite the progress made in bilateral negotiations and Switzerland's constructive position from the outset, the United States intends to unilaterally impose additional tariffs on imports from Switzerland."

"Switzerland has been and continues to be in contact with the relevant U.S. branches of government It further seeks to reach a negotiated solution that is consistent with both Swiss law and its international legal obligations," the message on Platform X said.

The new tariff for Switzerland is even higher than the previously announced 31% levy that Trump announced in April - symbolically just on Emancipation Day. The new duties are due to take effect on August 7 - the Swiss side has just a week to negotiate a less painful option.
