In several regions at once.
Energy and Natural Resources Minister Alparslan Bayraktar said on July 30 that Turkey has discovered 57 million barrels of oil reserves worth an estimated $4 billion in several regions since the beginning of the year.
This was reported by hurriyyetdailynews.com.
In a televised interview with the state-run Anadolu Agency, Bayraktar said the discoveries were made in Diyarbakir, Gabar and Batman.
He also said recent exploration for natural gas and oil has led to the discovery of 75 billion cubic meters of gas at the Göktepe-3 well in the Black Sea, enough to meet Turkey's gas needs for about a year and a half.
Bayraktar noted that onshore exploration continues, with new discoveries, and said these numbers are likely to increase by the end of the year.
The minister noted the potential for shale oil and gas in Diyarbakir, estimating reserves of 4 to 6 billion barrels in an area of 600 sq. km. km.
"We are cooperating with US firms there to extract hydrocarbons trapped between rock layers and plan to drill 24 vertical and horizontal wells," he said. - "In the area north of Bismil, we believe there could be a 350 million barrel oil reserve, which is comparable to Gabar."
In May, Turkey reportedly discovered a new 75 billion cubic meter natural gas field during drilling operations in the Black Sea
In 2024, Turkey produced 127,000 barrels per day (bpd) of oil, while importing the equivalent of nearly 1 million bpd of oil and oil products. Meanwhile, two-thirds of Turkey's imports last year were discounted Russian crude and oil products.
