They called for arms supplies to Ukraine to be restored.
US newspaper The New York Post on July 4 published an editorial in which it called on US President Donald Trump to rearm Ukraine. The journalists claim that Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin understands only force, writes nv.ua.
"Mr. President, we know you understand that the main obstacle to peace in Ukraine is Russian aggression. You said you were 'disappointed' to talk to Russian dictator Vladimir Putin and that you don't think he wants to stop," the NYP said in a statement.
According to US journalists, in his conversation with Trump, Putin again insisted that he did not want a ceasefire in Ukraine until the "root causes" of the war were addressed.
"For Vlad (as the journalists called dictator Vladimir Putin in the publication - ed.), the 'root cause' is the existence of Ukraine," the NYP adds.
The American newspaper also asked Trump about why his administration is punishing Ukraine so much.
"You remember the desperation on the face of the Ukrainian journalist you spoke movingly to in the Netherlands, her fear for her husband and family. Why are we threatening to abandon her? There is a belief, enforced by biased ideologues, that helping Ukraine is somehow harmful to the United States and is not in our interest. This is not true at all," the journalists continue.
NYP reminded the Trump administration that Ukraine is partially paying for the weapons provided from confiscated Russian assets and European grants. Because of this, the journalists believe, the U.S. military can use the funds, and the intelligence provided may be needed to build "better drones and anti-missile technology."
"But most importantly, Ukraine's fate is a signal to the world about America. Russia is not an economic superpower at all. It is a dying terrorist state. Putin is ready to shed the blood of his people in a final battle for empire. If we allow him to succeed, it will not only threaten Europe. It will show China that our alliances are unsustainable," the newspaper said.
As the editorial concludes in its column, Ukraine's defeat "is not a disaster that can be blamed on someone else or attributed to the insignificance of the country. It will destabilize the world, weaken America and negatively affect your presidency."
