Trump Signed Letters On Duties To 12 Countries

They will be shipped on Monday.

U.S. President Donald Trump says he has signed letters to 12 countries outlining duty levels to be paid on goods exported to the United States, proposals to "accept or reject" will be sent on Monday.

According to Reuters .

Trump, speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One during a trip to New Jersey, declined to name the countries in question, saying it would be made public on Monday.

"I signed some letters and they will be sent out on Monday. Different amounts of money, different amounts of duties," Trump said.

Trump back in April announced a 10% base duty rate and additional amounts for most countries, some as high as 50%.

But all but the 10% prime rate were subsequently suspended for 90 days to allow more time for negotiations to reach agreements.

This period expires on July 9, although Trump said Friday morning that the tariffs could be even higher - up to 70% - and most would take effect on August 1.

Trump and his closest aides initially said they would begin negotiations with dozens of countries on customs rates, but the U.S. president has grown frustrated with the process after repeated failures with major trading partners including Japan and the EU.
