US Holds New Round Of Talks With Russian Federation On Ukraine And Reported A Complete Lack Of Progress

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio revealed the details.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke to Fox News about non-public talks between the Russian and American sides this week. He said Vladimir Putin did not participate in the dialog, but other senior Kremlin officials were involved.

The U.S. administration, Rubio noted, had hoped for "some mutual understanding" in the search for a peaceful resolution in Ukraine, but in the end "no progress was made in that direction." "And that's what I think worries the president [Donald Trump] the most," the State Department chief said.

Rubio emphasized that the US believes the best way out of the situation is an immediate ceasefire and the start of negotiations. However, he said, Moscow has not shown "sincere interest" in finding a diplomatic solution, and in this regard, Trump is ready to take action if no tangible progress is made by August 8.

Rubio explained that the US president "has many options for pressure." Among the possible measures, he named the imposition of secondary sanctions on the sale of Russian oil, which accounts for a substantial part of the country's revenue, as well as banking and sectoral sanctions. "We hope it will not come to that and it will be possible to find a way to end hostilities," the diplomat added.

On July 14, Donald Trump publicly demanded that Russia end its aggression against Ukraine within 50 days. However, he soon toughened his rhetoric, expressing "deep disappointment" with Vladimir Putin's actions in continuing to escalate the military conflict in Ukraine despite the White House's efforts.

July 29, Trump shortened the ultimatum, giving Moscow ten days to end the war. On July 31, US Deputy Charge d'Affaires to the United Nations John Kelly confirmed: Washington expects the fighting to be completely halted by August 8. Otherwise, the US president promised to impose 100 percent duties on trade with Russia, as well as against those countries that continue economic cooperation with it.

Russian presidential spokesman Dmitri Peskov responded by saying that Russia does not intend to curtail military operations despite US demands. At the same time, he emphasized that the Russian economy has allegedly already adapted to Western sanctions and "developed immunity."
