Trump Allowed Ukrainian Refugees To Stay In The U.S. Until The War Is Over

At the same time, in January, he suspended a program that allowed Ukrainians to obtain temporary status in the United States.

Ukrainian refugees will be able to stay in the United States until the fighting is over, US President Donald Trump told reporters, video published by Foreign Press correspondent Alex Raufoglu in X.

Answering a question about whether Washington would allow Ukrainian refugees to stay in the country until the fighting is over, Trump said: "We will do that. We have a lot of people who have come from Ukraine and we're working with them."

Since returning to the White House, Trump has pursued a hardline anti-migrant policy. Immediately after his inauguration, he signed an executive order that suspended the United for Ukraine (U4U) refugee assistance program established by his predecessor Joe Biden. It allowed Ukrainians and their immediate family members to stay in the United States for two years if they had financial sponsors. The New York Times called this program "key". According to the newspaper, more than 150,000 people had become its participants by September 2023.
