Earthquake In Kamchatka: Japan, Alaska And Hawaii Announced A Tsunami Threat

Residents were urged to take immediate action.

The United States and Japan have issued a tsunami warning after a powerful earthquake struck off Russia's east coast.

This was reported by Bloomberg.

A magnitude 8.7 earthquake struck southeast of the city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky on the Kamchatka Peninsula on the morning of Wednesday, July 30, local time.

"A tsunami has formed that could cause damage to the coasts of all islands in the state of Hawaii," the U.S. National Weather Service's Tsunami Warning System said.

Residents are urged to take immediate action to protect life and property.

The service also announced a tsunami threat for the entire west coast of the United States and Canada, as well as the Aleutian Islands, the island of Guam, the Philippines, Russia and some Pacific islands, particularly Yap and the Marshall Islands.

The service also announced a tsunami threat for the entire west coast of the U.S. and Canada, particularly California, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia and Alaska.

The warning extends from California's border with Mexico through Oregon and Washington to British Columbia in Canada, and then continues to Southern Alaska and the Alaska Peninsula.

In addition, a tsunami threat has been declared for the Aleutian Islands, the island of Guam, the Philippines, Russia and some Pacific islands, particularly Yapu and the Marshall Islands.

Threat to Japan

Japan's state broadcaster NHK warned of the tsunami risk and urged people to leave the coast.

The broadcaster showed cars leaving the coastal areas of Matsushima in Miyagi Prefecture in northern Japan.

The National Meteorological Service said wave heights could reach 3 meters in some areas of Japan.

For comparison, during the 2011 tsunami disaster, wave heights reached nearly 40 meters.

Earthquakes in Kamchatka

On the morning of July 30, a magnitude over 8 magnitude earthquake struck the Kamchatka Peninsula.

A kindergarten was damaged in the town of Severo-Kurilsk, and a tsunami threat was also declared in the region. According to local authorities, these are the most powerful tremors in the region in decades.
