The Kamchatka Peninsula has been hit by the most powerful earthquake in a decade. Administrative infrastructure in the Russian region has been damaged and a tsunami threat has been declared. This is the strongest earthquake in the region since 1952, the Geophysical Service of the Russian Academy of Sciences said.

The RBC-Ukraine reports this with reference to Russian publiki.

The first tremors began in the town of Severo-Kurilsk at 11:30 local time.

According to eyewitnesses, at that moment furniture shook, goods fell from store shelves, household appliances began to fall and car alarms went off.

According to seismologists' preliminary assessment, the tremor had a magnitude of up to 7.9.

According to the Russian media, earthquakes also occurred in Severo-Kurilsk and Petropavlovsk. In some areas of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, tremors of 7-8 magnitude were felt.

Sakhalin Region Governor Valery Limarenko said that a tsunami threat has been declared in the region and residents are being evacuated to the uplands from the potentially dangerous zone.

"Emergency services are working in full, the situation is under control. All necessary measures are being taken to ensure people's safety and restore normal life in the area," he wrote.

Kindergarten damaged

The governor of Kamchatka Krai Vladimir Solodov said the region had experienced "the strongest tremors in the last decade".

"A tsunami threat has been announced, the strength of the wave is being specified, I urge everyone not to approach the coastline in tsunami-hazardous areas and to follow announcements over loudspeaker," Solodov said.

A part of the facade collapsed at kindergarten No. 15 "Rodnichok" in the town of Severo-Kurilsk. There were no children inside - the room was undergoing repairs and workers were able to leave the building in time.


Tsunami threat and new tremors

After the earthquake, the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration issued a tsunami threat for the Alaska Peninsula.

Japan's meteorological agency also reported a tsunami threat for its coastline.

In the meantime, according to the Russian media, the first tsunami waves have reached the shores of North Kurilsk.

A new 5.8 magnitude tremor has occurred in Kamchatka.
