Bild: Germany Wants To Agree With The US On Financing Two Patriot Systems For Ukraine

The head of the Pentagon was sent an inquiry about the secret deal.

The German government is urgently working on a solution to give Ukraine new air defense systems and missiles. Berlin is expecting a commitment from US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to provide two Patriot surface-to-air missile systems, which Germany will finance.

This is reported by Bild, citing sources.

The request for the secret deal was sent to Hegseth several weeks ago, they said. As the publication notes, Ukraine previously tried to buy Patriot systems directly from the US, but without success. After that, Kiev turned to Germany for help. However, it is now unclear how the US decision to suspend arms deliveries will affect the agreements with Berlin.

The White House stopped the arms transfer, which was agreed upon by the previous administration, without explaining the reasons. The German government now fears that the US may also refuse Germany's request for two Patriot systems for Ukraine, Bild writes.

The cancellation of arms deliveries was also discussed at a government meeting on July 2.

"It has become clear that the loss of weapons from the US cannot be compensated for. However, Germany and other allies now want to try to at least provide Ukraine with Patriot systems from their own stockpiles," the piece said.

On July 2, Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell confirmed a review of arms deliveries to Ukraine and said the Defense Department was providing President Donald Trump with options for military assistance to Kiev to end the war, given the desire to "preserve the readiness of the U.S. Armed Forces and the priorities of the America First program."
