Hakeem Jeffrey plans to continue performing for at least a few more hours.
The Democratic minority leader of the U.S. House of Representatives, Hakim Jeffrey, has been speaking from the floor for more than six hours amid a vote in favor of a spending bill being pushed by U.S. President Donald Trump.
According to The Guardian on Thursday, July 3.
The Democratic leader only noted that he plans to continue speaking for at least a few more hours. He also noted that he will probably read the Declaration of Independence, adopted by the Continental Congress on July 4, 1776.
Jeffries added that he has read a lot of feedback from Americans - parents, veterans, business owners. He said they all say they would be harmed by a bill that could "undermine the country's debt" and "destroy the social safety net."
The Hill writes that regulatory rules limit a single congressman to speaking for one minute, but party leaders are allowed to speak for longer, making that "minute" actually stretch into hours.
On June 27, Reuters wrote that Republican Party representatives in the U.S. Senate are facing a huge hole in the budget because of Donald Trump's bill.
One Big Beautiful Bill Act is a bill proposed by the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump and passed by the U.S. House of Representatives on May 22, 2025, by a minimal margin (215-214).
The bill, also known as H.R. 1 Congress, aims to implement Trump's key campaign promises, including tax breaks, spending cuts, increased border security and other reforms.
